Tilt by Thermal And A Quarter is so idyllic, what’s not to love

This year has been one of deep sorrow, loss, pain, fear, and separation. An indulgence rather than an escape, Bangalore rockers and internationally charting act Thermal And A Quarter’s new song, Tilt, is an uplifting outpour of effervescent energy. It’s a reason to smile, a buoyant exploration and embrace of our inner light where once we may have felt consumed in darkness. Freeing and feel good, “Tilt” is TAAQ’s catchy and hopeful reckoning between rebellion and harmony – a song we can submit ourselves to, and come out the other side feeling refreshed, renewed, and a little more self-assured.

The band has been busy during the lockdown. After the 7-city tour to promote the band’s 8th studio album ‘A World Gone Mad’ was scuttled thanks to COVID-19, the band hunkered down and began working on new material. With everyone confined to their homes for months, the ideas of ‘jamming’ and ‘collaboration’ had to be redefined and from all of that has emerged the first in a new series of songs – ‘Tilt’. The bands’ frontman and songwriter-guitarist, Bruce Lee Mani wrote the song at home, away from his usual studio and practice setup of amps and more. He says, “Every album which our band released over the last twenty-four years has been reflective on our individual mind-states and life-situations at that point in time, and Tilt is no different. It’s a contemplative snapshot of our perspectives and dreams at this point in time. The message at the heart of the song is about how one can roll at the punches and adapt to inevitable change.”

‘Tilt’, as the title suggests, is all about getting a new perspective, in our heads and hearts. Primarily acoustic, this groovy new track has a ‘chill’ vibe, but a contemplative message. Mani adds, “Sometimes things fall off balance, but they give us a new perspective into how the world works, and how reality plans for you. The song is about trying to find balance.”

Mani has played the acoustic guitar for the song and shared that the band will release a primarily acoustic-based EP soon. Produced, mixed and mastered by the band’s bassist, Leslie Charles, the song is a marked departure from the sound scapes of their album ‘A World Gone Mad’, but seems no less relevant for our times. With a few more such acoustic songs in the offing, TAAQ is, once again, evolving, redefining and growing as a musical force.
