The catchy folk-style guitar hook and the weightless vocals create a dreamy affair, from which we never want to wake. This is the third single from Winsome’s album titled, Jukebox Blues. It was mix and mastered by Jack Shirley from Atomic Garden Recording Studios in Oakland, California.

WWM: What genres/artists is Jukebox Blues influenced by?
Winsome: Jukebox blues is inspired by many genres but if i had to narrow it down I would say we try to blend 90’s emo/ post punk sounds, bands like Modest mouse, Unwound, and Spirit of the beehive with more singer songwriter type artists like Andy Shauf, Faye Webster, Alice Phoebe Lou but we pull influences from all over.
WWM: What’s your songwriting process like?
Winsome: The songwriting process can vary but typically starts with a chord progression that starts on the guitar and vocals are added to it, then it is jammed with drums and bass and we kind of chop things, move things around and work with dynamics.
WWM: Tell us about your musical journey, take us back to the start.
Winsome: We started Winsome back in August 2019 with Joey Oliveira (guitar/ vocals) and Aaron Inacio (drums). We had played in a band called Socks back in 2016-2017 and we got together 2 years later and formed winsome. It started with a handful of songs Joey had written and then he got in touch with Aaron and asked if he wanted to jam, we jammed and it was fun and that’s how Winsome started. We ended up about a year later getting bassist Evan Saint Elena to record on our album Jukebox blues.
WWM: Tell us about the experience of making your EP. Could you please elaborate on the themes and inspiration driving these tracks?
Winsome: All the songs’ lyrics are written by me (Joey Oliveira). They mainly are about typical things you write songs about like loneliness, heartbreak, regret, jealousy, time feeling wasted, transitioning into adulthood. I typically write songs to take a step back and analyze what I’m feeling and try to tell a story and be honest because I feel people will always connect with your music if you are honest and trust your instincts. I’m very inspired by artists like Andy Shauf who can really paint a picture and tell a story with their lyrics. I think that’s what I strive for when writing a song, I want to make it like a mini movie.
WWM: Could you tell us about your aspirations as a musician? What are your musical plans for say the next 6 months?
Winsome: We would like to keep making music for as long as possible and just try to keep things interesting and evolve as musicians. We have a lot of new stuff we are working on at the moment. We really want to expand our instrumentation, maybe have some keyboard, lead guitar, and vocal harmonies. We don’t have a specific sound we are shooting for, we just want to make sure everyone in the band is having fun and things are exciting. Hopefully, we will be able to release a 4-6 song EP within the next 6 months. The Jukebox Blues recording process was very rushed, we recorded it in one day, so with our next release we want to take our time and add more layers and instruments.
