WWM – What’s your creative process like?
Aiela Angela – My creative process begins at random. It varies greatly from time to time. Sometimes it starts with a melody or a line that I can’t get out of my head, and from there a song is created. Typically, I’ll begin with a random chord progression on guitar and then develop a melody from that chord progression. That melody is also influenced by my current mood. There is no set process; I just go with the flow.
WWM – Tell us about the experience of making your new song, “Dance With The Devil”.
Aiela Angela – Making “Dance With The Devil” was unlike anything I’d ever done before. This single features a distinctive instrumental created by my producer, Machua Touchez. I was reluctant to write a song on the instrumental track he sent me because it is so daring and unique. The track itself was out of my comfort zone. When I told him, he said, “First, let me see what you can do with this track.” I accepted that as a challenge and composed “Dance With The Devil” in an hour. I wasn’t a fan of it at first, but after hearing and seeing the entire picture of the song, I couldn’t get it out of my head.
WWM – Tell me about your musical background.
Aiela Angela – Since I was a child, I’ve had a musical inclination. My grandfather and uncle are both musicians who influenced me early on. I grew up listening to songs from the 1980s and 1990s since my family would always play them. Those were the songs I used to sing as a kid. When I was in middle school, I was introduced to mainstream musicians such as Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Rihanna, to name a few. They have had an impact on the music I make now. Their stories about how they achieved their goals inspire me to keep doing what I enjoy.
WWM – How has your practice changed over time?
Aiela Angela – My practice, I believe, has evolved significantly over time. Before, I was just singing for fun, and all I did for practice was sing the songs I enjoy singing. Now, I still sing the songs I enjoy, but I try to put my own spin on them. I sing a song in both a lower and higher key. I strive to give my voice variety and find out what works for me. It’s not about being flawless, but about recognizing what works for you.
WWM – The video looks great! Tell us about it’s conceptualisation.
Aiela Angela – My best friend came up with the idea for the video. At the time, I was video calling her and we were brainstorming ideas. She offered me the idea of writing phrases on a mirror with red lipstick. We chose to include it in the lyric video. We had planned a trilogy, with the lyric video portraying the aftermath of a breakup. We imagine the lyric video to be full of sadness, yelling, and just craziness.
WWM – What’s one anecdote that you’d love to share about making “Dance With The Devil”.
Aiela Angela – Dance With The Devil began as a love story that I made up in my head. In that narrative, the girl, or villain as I choose to call her, was madly in love with a guy who already had a girlfriend. The villain made a deal with the guy, and they became lovers as a result. When he accepted the deal, he was already the “Devil” for inflicting pain on his girlfriend for the sake of pleasure. As the song comes to an end, the line becomes sad. In the end, the devil abandoned the villain, and their story came to an end there. Dance With The Devil revolves around infidelity and betrayal.
WWM – Do you have any up-coming performances you would like fans to know about? Is there anything else you would like to announce for your fans or anything you would like them to know?
Aiela Angela – I’ve been meaning to share a video, and it’s the key to the story of Dance With The Devil. This video will be released very soon. 2021 has a lot planned for it. All I could say is there would be more soul-satisfying music!
