Brooklyn NY based Indie Music project Skinny Dippers have put out a new track titled Through Tryin. ‘Through Tryin’ is a song about growing older. It’s about wanting to find your place and work on self-improvement while being stuck in a stage where you’re unsure how to actually do it. The song hints at how people may idolize a fantasy self in a relationship and overlook all that’s going wrong when they’re actually coupled up with the wrong person. This forthrightness is what continues to make Skinny Dippers so endearing. The lyrics are confessional, never judgemental – an open church for one and all to air grievances and come to terms with complex emotions, as indie-rock clatters away in the background.
“We often try so hard to make a bad thing work for selfish reasons, but discerning when you need to cut ties can actually lead to the growth you were looking for all along which you thought could only come from a relationship.” – Skinny Dippers
The band was formed in 2020 and is fronted by singer/songwriter Ryan Gross. Drawing from his roots growing up on the coast of Maine, his style spans a broad range of genres by blending guitar driven indie rock arrangements with analog synthesizers and choral harmonies. The songwriting shares inside jokes and intimate moments through understated lyricism while capturing personal moments and turning them into feelings every listener can relate to. Musically the band pulls from a number of influences including artists like The Shins, Stephen Malkmus, and STRFKR.
In 2021 Gross enlisted the help of neighbors Jordan Dunn-Pilz and Dan Alvarez of the band TOLEDO to join as collaborators and producers on his debut album The Town & The City. The songs blend Indie-Rock, Folk, and Dream Pop forming a collection of stories about growing up on the rural coast and moving into adulthood in the depths of New York City.
